Brothers and sisters in Christ,
Amidst the uncertainty, changes, and fears brought on by the coronavirus pandemic, please be assured of my prayers for every one of you, and of my thanks for all that you are doing to keep people safe and help suppress the spread of this virus. Each of us has been called to challenging actions out of charity to help “flatten the curve”, not the least effect of which is the suspension of public masses across the archdiocese. This is perhaps one of the hardest challenges I have faced as a priest, and we have faced as a parish and as a diocese. I miss sharing the Eucharist with you and seeing you; I am offering daily Mass for your intentions, and I look forward to the time when we can once again celebrate public Mass.
While the spiritual and emotional effects of the suspension of Masses are profound and challenging, they bring with them another trial for our parish to face. Because we are unable to gather in person, we are also unable to receive your offertory gift as we normally would. Almost all of us have been financially impacted by the requisite closures that accompany this crisis, and our parish is no exception. Your gifts to the parish support our ministries, our operating expenses, our employees, and our school. I am grateful for your financial support and appreciate your continued support in this crucial time. If your circumstances prevent you from being able to make a gift at this time, please know I understand and my prayers for you and your family will be unwavering. If you have prayerfully discerned your ability to continue supporting us in this difficult time, I thank you!
To make a gift, please visit our parish online giving at www.olsos.org/give or give.aod.org and select our parish, “Our Lady Star of the Sea”, when setting up a payment. You may make a one-time or recurring gift; if you don’t mind, would you consider making a recurring offering, similar to being in church? If making an online gift is not an option at this time, you could mail a check to the parish office. No matter the method, your gift will be gratefully received and will help our parish in the coming weeks.
This is a challenging time, and I pray that our faith and trust in the Lord will increase and that the grace and comfort of the Holy Spirit be with us all during this coronavirus pandemic. I look forward to seeing you soon. Thank you for your prayers and support.
Peace in Christ,
Msgr. Gary Smetanka
