“God has bestowed upon his people the gift of song. God dwells within each person, in the place where music takes its source. Indeed, God, the giver of song, is present whenever his people sing his praises.” (Sing to the Lord 1).
Music is an integral part of the liturgical life of the church. Closely bound to the liturgical rites, “a liturgical service takes on a nobler aspect when the rites are celebrated with singing.” (Sacrosanctum Concilium 113). Joined together in the presence of God, the assembly and ministers join their voices for two main purposes: the glorification of God and the sanctification of the faithful. As we make music, we express our unity of voice as the Body of Christ which gives glory to the Father.
As a community and as individuals, we are called to full, conscious, and active participation in the liturgy. This involves our internal engagement and prayer which inspires our outward participation in action, word, and song. While all are called to participate in the liturgy as a singing assembly, some may feel called to share their particular gifts of music in the following ministries.
Music at Our Lady Star of the Sea consists of a variety of ensembles and styles. People of all ages, talents, and skill level are welcome to join in this important ministry which enhances the prayer life of our church. To get involved in music ministry, please contact Matthew Jakubisin at email@example.com / 313-554-8884 or stop by the piano after any liturgy.
OLSOS Adult Choir
The Adult Choir ministers to the parish at the 11:30 liturgy and certain holy day liturgies (Christmas, All Saints, Ash Wednesday, Holy Week, and Easter). Rehearsals are Wednesday evenings 7:00pm – 8:30pm in the choir room.
The Men’s Schola sings at two liturgies a year: All Souls Day and Good Friday. The group is open to all men of the parish and meets only a few weeks before each liturgy to prepare music.
The Youth Chorale is for 3rd – 5th grade students at Our Lady Star of the Sea School. They sing at Sunday Mass once a month along with other community events. Rehearsals are on Thursday afternoons from 3:15pm - 4:30pm. The Youth Chorale is directed by Mrs. Jennifer Koester, the school music teacher.
The Youth Schola is a new group for middle school students at Our Lady Star of the Sea School. They sing at Sunday Mass and may serve as cantors or soloists. They also will sing at community events and will spend some time learning non-liturgical music such as musical selections. Rehearsals are Tuesday afternoons 3:15pm – 4:30pm. The Youth Schola is directed by Mrs. Jennifer Koester, the school music teacher.
Cantors are scheduled monthly and rehearse individually with the music minister before each Mass. The cantor sings the psalm and helps lead congregational song.
Instruments add beauty and embellishment to our liturgies. Many instruments are welcome (flute, oboe, clarinet, trumpet, violin, cello, saxophone, etc.). Instrumentalists are scheduled individually and coordinated with the music minister.
Veterans Day Concert
Each year we host a Veterans Day Concert featuring a choir to lead patriotic hymns and learn other American songs. This is a fun non-liturgical choir open to other parishes and the surrounding community. This group begins rehearsing on Thursday evenings from 7:00-8:00 pm four weeks prior to the concert on Veterans Day.
